Budget Quest

A playful budgeting app for children

About Budget Quest

Budget Quest is an app that aims to make saving and budgeting fun for children and their caretakers. Children set savings goals (the purchase they're saving for) and caretakers assign quests (chores) to their children, which can be completed for monetary rewards. With Budget Quest, caretakers can incentivize their children to complete everyday chores and children can gain a sense of accomplishment for reaching their goals. Budget Quest's mission is to make everyday life feel a little more like an adventure.

Primary persona:

Rebecca was developed as the primary persona based off interviewing two parents about their children's tech and chore habits.

Budget Quest was built with Sketch and prototyped with InVision in 12 hours. My initial thought was to create a virtual piggy bank but I soon hit on the idea of a budgeting journey, in which children would complete quests to progress. After some quick sketches in a notebook, I decided to run with this idea and proceeded to map out the app's user flow in Sketch, with a low fidelity wireframe:

The completed mockups and prototype focus solely on the app from a child's point of view. The prototype begins with logging into an account, choosing a hero, and setting a new goal. From there, users can track progress to their goals, accept new quests from caretakers, view account stats, and see a list of completed goals.

Future iterations would have included features for caretakers. This will consist of the ability to create quests, approve completed quests, and track the progress that their children have made towards their goals.
